We haven't finished our hands-on test of Loto-Québec online casino (Espacejeux) yet, so there's no score. Everything below comes from regulator records, Loto-Québec online casino (Espacejeux)'s own published information and the sources linked on this page.

Who runs Espacejeux

Espacejeux is the online gaming site of Loto-Québec, a Crown corporation owned by the Government of Quebec. Loto-Québec was created by an act passed in 1969, and its first draw took place on 14 March 1970.

The Quebec government authorised the corporation to offer online gaming in January 2010, and Espacejeux.com launched on 1 December 2010. Public health groups opposed the move at the time. Loto-Québec said online gaming was already a reality through illegal sites.

The site is written in French first, and the casino lives at espacejeux.com/fr.

Regulation and who can play

Unlike Ontario, Quebec does not license private casino operators. Loto-Québec runs the market itself as a provincial monopoly, so there is no separate operator licence number to show.

The site's specific terms of use say players must be 18 or older and residents of Quebec, and must be physically in Quebec when they access their account. Identity has to be validated before you can play for real money. Without that, an account can only join promotions. People who are self-excluded from Loto-Québec venues or the site are not eligible.

Games

Loto-Québec's site lists Espacejeux as covering casino (including live casino and slot machines), sports betting through Mise-o-jeu+, poker, bingo and instant games. This review covers the casino.

The casino homepage features slots such as Scarlet's Awakening and Monopoly Money Magnate, and an instant game called Pyramide. A MegaJackpots section lists 17 slots, among them Cleopatra, Da Vinci Diamonds, Wheel of Fortune on Air, Wolf Run and Golden Goddess, with stakes shown per game from about $0.15 up to $160.

Bonuses and promotions

The Espacejeux casino homepage does not show a welcome bonus. The only promotion on it was for Mise-o-jeu+ sports betting, so check the promotions pages for current casino offers.

The terms of use describe several kinds of promotional money. Argent Web is non-cashable game credit usable on all online games, with a limit of $500 per week per account. Argent boni may be limited to certain games. Gains retenus are held winnings that cannot be added to your balance until a wagering requirement is met. Argent Pari gratuit is for Mise-o-jeu+ only.

Deposits and withdrawals

Everything is in Canadian dollars. Each player sets a weekly deposit limit from $25 to $9,999 in whole dollars. Lowering the limit takes effect immediately, but raising it takes effect 24 hours after the request is processed.

The terms say prepaid cards and corporate or US credit cards (Capital One and MBNA are named) generally cannot be used, and that available methods depend on your bank and operating system. Check the cashier for the full list of methods.

To withdraw you must link a personal bank account. The minimum withdrawal is generally $10, and a request has a minimum 24-hour processing delay. Withdrawals of $100,000 or more need an in-person appointment with ID.

Safer gambling and support

Under a section called Encadrer mon jeu, Espacejeux lists limits, breaks and self-exclusion. Loto-Québec runs a Bien jouer site and a help and referral line on 1 800 461-0140, and links to its World Lottery Association certification.

The site also has a FAQ, a contact page and a technical help page.

Who it suits

Espacejeux is the regulated option for people who live in Quebec and want an online casino run by the provincial government, with limits built in. It is not open to players elsewhere in Canada.

We haven't finished our own hands-on test yet, so there is no score. Set your weekly limit before you deposit. 18+ in Quebec. Gamble responsibly.
