Who runs bet365 and its history
bet365 was founded in 2000 by Denise Coates in a portable building in Stoke-on-Trent, and went online in March 2001. It borrowed £15 million from the Royal Bank of Scotland, secured against the family's betting shop estate, which her father Peter Coates started in 1974. The family sold the shop chain to Coral for £40 million in 2005 and repaid the loan.
The company is privately held by the Coates family. Denise Coates owns 50.1 percent and is joint chief executive with her brother John, and Peter is chairman. It reported revenue of £4 billion and a pre-tax profit of £349 million for fiscal 2024, and had more than 10,000 staff as of 2026. The legal entity behind the UK brand is Hillside (New Media) Limited.
Licensing and safety
In Great Britain, bet365 betting is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission under account 55148, held by Hillside (UK Sports) ENC. The casino has its own licence, account 55149. Both can be looked up on the Commission's public register. The minimum age is 18 and GAMSTOP applies to all licensed online operators.
In Canada, bet365 is listed in Ontario and Alberta. The Ontario licensee is Hillside (International Sports) ENC. The Alberta entity is shown as Hillside (Sports) MP Limited by the Alberta iGaming Corporation, though another register uses slightly different names. Ontario players must be 19 and Alberta players 18.
In the US, state-specific Hillside LLC companies hold the licences, trading as bet365. bet365 offers sports betting in Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia. You must be 21 or over.
Growth and where bet365 operates
bet365 reached Canada with an Ontario launch in April 2022 and opened in Colorado on 6 September 2022, after earlier plans for New Jersey in 2018. It was approved in Brazil in February 2025 and launched in France on 26 May 2026, although neither affects the regions covered here.
The brand is long associated with sport sponsorship. It has been Stoke City's shirt sponsor since 2012, and the club's stadium has been named the bet365 Stadium since 2016. In 2019 it agreed with other large UK operators to raise its contribution to tackling gambling harm from 0.1 percent to 1 percent of gross income over five years.
